Student Explorers offers an educational, fun and safe summer camp opportunity for under-served students. The participants are chosen based on their response to an essay contest. For most, it is their first time away from home, without familiar faces around to fall back on.

The five-day adventure is a transforming experience. In addition to the “classroom” learning, Student Explorers gain self-confidence, cultural awareness, team work skills and invaluable life lessons. Students get to spend five summer days at a science-based camp a plane ride away from their everyday lives.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math skills over the summer months; low-income students also lose more than two months in reading achievement, despite the fact that their middle-class peers make slight gains. More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities. As a result, low-income youth are less likely to graduate from high school or enter college.

Student Explorers have traveled to NASA Space Camp, Busch Gardens Adventure Camp, Bahamas Discovery Cove, Northwestern University’s ID Tech camp and most recently, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Space camp 2014

On July 13th, twelve of JRJF's Student Explorers went on a 5 day summer learning experience in Huntsville, Al. for a S.T.E.M. mission through Robotics Space Camp. The James R. Jordan Foundation believes that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) education is becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s world, and seeks to provide their hard-working Student Explorers’ with an opportunity to excel. These students learned about the engineering and design behind robots on land, in the air, and underwater thru intensive hands-on instruction. The Foundation
selected these 12 promising essayists, aged between 5th and 6th grade, following their Annual Student Explorers Essay Contest held in May.
The Student Explorers Program encourages youth to think outside the box by providing this unique summertime opportunity, which fosters life-changing skills such as independence, ingenuity and determination.
“Time out from school does not mean time out from learning, says Mrs. Deloris Jordan, president and founder of the James R. Jordan Foundation. The James R. Jordan Foundation is deeply grateful for partners like United, which continue to make our mission possible by their generous support.”
