How to Increase Reading Skills for CPS Students

5/13/2021

Throughout May and June, the James R. Jordan Foundation is sharing stories of growth and success to promote our Sunshine for Students fundraising campaign. This week we're sharing stories and updates from our Read with Me! program. Learn more about the program below:
Read With Me! equips students from Pre-Kindergarten to 4th grade with improved literacy skills and increased reading motivation. RWM sets students up to enter 5th grade on their targeted reading level to compete with their peers and continued academic success.

How Your Contributions Help

With your continued support, students from our partner CPS schools are able to increase their reading and literacy ability by attending sponsored workshops, reading new books, and writing with donated supplies. Our Program Manager, Ms. Markessa Hughley, wanted to share some recent stories of growth about her RWM students:

Sunshine for Students Spotlight: Daylen Harris

Daylen Harris is a 3rd-grade student at Sherman School of Excellence.

"During our Read with Me! Sessions, Daylen is always a wonderful, loving, and bright student that is willing to participate in any reading activities that are headed his way. He always works hard with every reading assignment and is always the first to participate." - Ms. Markessa

In his pre-assessment, Daylen's reading ability was at a low 3rd-grade level. Some of his challenges were pronouncing words with a long vowel and reading comprehension. At the time, he could only read books at a high 2nd-grade level and had a difficult time completing a complex sentence.

Ms. Markessa and Daylen's teacher's goal for Daylen's post-assessment is to increase his Edward Fry Readability Quick Score by 0.9 at the end of the year. By doing this, he will be reading at a beginning 4th-grade level, a huge improvement from where he started.

Sunshine for Students Spotlight: Shaniyah Murphy''
Shaniyah Murphy is a 2nd-grade student at Sherman School of Excellence.

"During our Read with Me! Session, she is an energetic and bright student that is willing to participate in any reading activities. She always tells me that her favorite subject is reading and is always the first person that participates to read out loud. Depsite the difficulties Shaniyah had when we started, she never let them stop her. She is always eager to participate and encourage other students in the program." - Ms. Markessa

In her pre-assessment, Shaniyah's reading ability was at a middle 2nd-grade level. Some of her challenges were pronouncing words with a long vowel and she had difficulties with completing complex sentences. Ms. Markessa and Shaniyah's teacher's goal for Shaniyah is to have her increase 0.9 points in the Edward Fry Readability Quick Score at the end of the year for her post-assessment. This will leave her reading at a middle 3rd grade level, increasing her reading ability by a whole grade.
