Summer S.T.E.A.M. 2021 Wraps Up at Northwestern University (Video & Pictures)

7/16/2021

On Friday, July 16th, the James R. Jordan Foundation finished the first week of our annual Summer S.T.E.A.M. program in partnership with Northwestern University! Throughout the week, CPS students from our four partner schools were transported to Northwestern's campus to learn about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through projects, interactive presentations, lab tours, and more!

Check out pictures and watch our recap video below (click 'Read more")
Every morning, students worked on a hands-on Computer Science project that culminated with a showcase at the end of the week. The four project options for students were:
  • Game Design in Scratch
  • Sports Sense
  • Interactive Visual Art with p5.js
  • Physical Computing
Students from Jordan, Sherman, Dett, and Brown all did an amazing job at creating and presenting their projects. Not only were students learning new coding techniques and languages, they also go the chance to flex their creativity and innovation with open-ended design projects.

Look through over 100 photos from the week below!
In the afternoon, students got to explore the broader field of computer science and learn about the research of professors and graduate students at Northwestern. Lab tours, guest speakers, and recess on the beach were just some of the afternoon activities. On Friday, students took an extended tour of the campus, including a stop at The Garage (a community and physical space for entrepreneurship and innovation), and the Ryan Fieldhouse (Northwestern's sports facility for varsity athletes).

We'd like to thank Northwestern University, JRJF Advisory Board Member Dr. Michael Horn, the volunteers, guest speakers, and the TIDAL Lab team for their continued partnership and for providing students with breakfast, lunch, snacks, and (s)more!
