Thanking Mothers All Month Long

6/10/2021

Picture
The James R. Jordan Foundation is excited to share updates from our Visions for Families program. The Visions for Families' objective is to strengthen the ties between school and home, understanding that education is a holistic process.
Program highlights in this weeks newsletter include our 4 partner school Mother's Day Celebrations, a recent Home Career workshop with BOMA, and a featured spotlight story about one of our most active moms in the program, Marrla Slaughter-McBee.

Mother's Day Celebrations Throughout May

May is a special month for Visions for Families since we get to celebrate the wonderful Mothers that lead with integrity and are everyday role models for our students. Through the Visions for Families program and with donations from Robin Beaman and Cynthia Simpson of our Advisory Board, we were able to provide gifts for mothers at our four partner schools:

    - William H. Brown STEM Magnet School
    - Robert Nathaniel Dett Elementary School
    - Sherman School of Excellence
    - Jordan Community Public School

Gift bags included Revlon Hair products, a jewelry set, and a book. Check out some pictures of the celebration below!

During the Mother's Day Celebration, we asked our parents to talk about their experience in the Visions for Families program. Here are some of their responses:

Many CPS parents are curious to learn more about home cooking, health education, the arts, starting a business, and more. To help us continue to provide workshops and events like the Mother's Day Celebration, please consider donating to Sunshine for Students today!

VFF Mother Spotlight: Marrla Slaughter-McBee

In honor of Mother's Day, Ms. Markessa Hughley (JRJF Program Manager) wanted to highlight one of the most active mothers from R. Nathaniel Dett Elementary in the Visions for Families program, Marrla Slaughter-McBee.

"Marrla is always a joy to have as part of the Visions for Families workshops," said Ms. Markessa. After attending every single Vision for Families session throughout the year, Marrla was selected to receive a $1,000 gift card for her engagement. Check out some screenshots below of Marrla's participation in the Home Gardening and Sip n' Paint workshops.

When asked how the VFF program has impacted her life, Marrla responded, "it allows me as a parent to learn new concepts while being creative remotely." Impacted by COVID-19, Marrla used the VFF workshops to "keep an open mind and be willing to learn new things during the pandemic." We'd like to thank Marrla for being such an active participant and encouraging others to engage more with the speakers and activities.

Home Career Workshop with BOMA

The James R. Jordan Foundation partnered with the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) to host "Home Career" workshops this past May. Parents and students from our partner schools participated in a virtual workshop where they learned about different career paths in industries such as commercial real estate, property management, and building engineering.

A total of 46 parents and 73 students (including 12 A-Team High School students) attended the virtual workshop. All 120 participants gained valuable insight into CRE career paths from professionals working directly in the field.

Thank you to all of the BOMA volunteers that joined us for the May Visions for Families workshop!
