7/19/2021

On Monday, July 19th, the 2021 Summer S.T.E.A.M. Program culminated with a jam-packed day at Lincoln Park Zoo. Students from Jordan Community Elementary School, Sherman School of Excellence, Robert Nathaniel Dett Elementary, and William H. Brown Elementary School were transported from their schools to the Zoo in the morning.

Learn more about Zoo Day and see more photos below! (Click "Read More")

People Bingo

Students began the day by playing a round of "People Bingo", where they went around and mingled with other students to figure out who is a Beyonce fan, who plays video games, who plays soccer, and so on. The student that scored a Bingo of student fun facts first won a small prize before the big competition began!

Scavenger Hunt

After People Bingo, students were divided up into two teams to compete in a Zoo-Wide Scavenger Hunt. Every student had a role in their team, and the goal was to find as many animals on their scavenger hunt sheet in just one hour. The team that found the most animals on their list within the hour won prizes to take home with them! Roles for each team included:

  • Team Leader (Responsible for motivating the team)
  • Map Keepers (Helped team navigate through the zoo with a map)
  • Reporter (Recording all their findings on the team's worksheet)
  • Time Keeper (Keeping the team on track to finish within the hour)
  • Photographer (Take pictures to prove they found the animals on the list)
  • Models (Representing the team by posing in the photos)
  • Safety Keepers (Making sure the group stays together and following the rules)

Once time was up for the Scavenger Hunt, students were able to rest and enjoy sandwiches and chips donated from Chick-Fil-A. Thank you for your contribution!

Award Ceremony

After lunch it was time to celebrate! Students received their Summer S.T.E.A.M. certificates, recognizing their participation and achievements in the program at Northwestern University and the Lincoln Park Zoo.

The Blue Team ended up winning the scavenger hunt by finding the most animals in the hour and were awarded with toys and fun prizes. Students from both teams were treated to an extra snack after the ceremony before weaving their way through the zoo back to the bus. The James R. Jordan Foundation would like to thank Rotary Volunteers Norma O'Day and Ashley Prentice for helping our staff out at Zoo Day! Your support is crucial to the success of our mission!

Congratulations to all the students for their achievements during this year's Summer S.T.E.A.M. Program! Check out more photos from the event below:
